Literacy begins with building a deep understanding of vocabulary. Start by clearly defining new terms with students, then identify synonyms to connect unfamiliar words to ones they already know.

Next, have students locate those terms within assigned readings, whether articles or textbook passages, and analyze their meaning in context. Encourage small-group discussions in which students explain the terms in their own words, then follow up with written responses. The more students write, the more they retain, and you'll see major improvements over time.
